August 15-- Moss Talks about his abilities and WR's being out
Sean Taylor was a little chippy during the lone night practice of the day at Redskins Park.. He took down one receiver on an out route and elbowed another.. Full contact is not permitted during camp but finally someone was taking a few shots..
The offense remains a work in progress, but for night, it was hard to blame Jason Campbell for not having very much rhythm, during team drills, Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El and Clinton Portis all watched.. James Thrash appeared to be limited as well.. Brandon Lloyd and Mike Espy were running the first team routes as the WR’s..
Since camp began there have been few days where the entire receiving core was on the field at the same time during team drills.. Randle El said he is not very concerned because he says all have been practicing at one time or another so it’s not like they haven’t been on the field at all.. Moss admitted that he could understand where Jason Campbell might need the receivers out there to get the offense down from a timing perspective, but he also said, “it isn’t like this is our first rodeo, as long as everyone is out there doing what they are supposed to do, we will be fine.”
Moss wanted to work with Jason Campbell alone this off-season but never got the chance to because he was recovering from groin and hamstring injuries, something that has persisted into the summer.. Moss took the team drills off tonight, it hasn’t been a regular occurrence but it’s happened enough times to know he isn’t 100%. When asked about his health being a factor in his production, in a rare moment of confidence (Moss often plays down his talents) he said, “If you know my history, even when I am not at 100% I’m better then most of these others guys when they are 100%.”
There was one strong moment during 11-11 when Campbell found Mike Espy in the back of the end zone, he made a leaping grab for a touchdown.. The down moment was a poorly throw pass easily picked off by Laron Landry..
First team drills did not include LG Todd Wade.. He did some individual work with the second team.. Wade is dealing with a shoulder injury, if he does not play this weekend, G Mike Pucillo will start, he was running with the first team tonight..
Other injuries: T Chris Samuels (knee) missed practice but was on the field doing some running as he gets closer to a return, he will not play this weekend.. RB Clinton Portis (knee) was held out of practice but did some of the individual RB drills today, an increase in his workload which had been focused mainly on cardio work.. TE Tyler Ecker (groin) was held out.. WR Cory Bradford ran on the side with trainers, he injured his hamstring in practice yesterday.. WR Antwaan Randle El was held out of team drills but did some individual work (quad). He contends he will play this weekend, he suggested it won’t be very much though..
RB Rock Cartwright appeared to have pulled a muscle in his right buttock/upper hamstring and was receiving aid from the trainers after pulling up following a run play..
One practice tomorrow.. The final work before the second pre-season game..
OK men..
